SEGA Partners with Irdeto to Overhaul Steam DRM Architecture: Family Sharing Disabled Across Catalog Post-Voice38 Lawsuit
Following unprecedented legal action against Voice38, SEGA is deploying hardware-bound Denuvo token enforcement across Sonic, Ryu Ga Gotoku, Persona, and upcoming releases, permanently blocking shared Steam libraries.

In what legal analysts are calling a watershed moment for PC game licensing, SEGA of America and its major publishing subsidiaries—including Atlus, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, and Sonic Team—have officially begun rolling out a revised digital rights management architecture across Steam. The move follows hot on the heels of Irdeto’s high-profile federal lawsuit against Voice38, the cracking entity accused of distributing automated Denuvo ticket-generation emulators.
While Denuvo Anti-Tamper has long been a staple of SEGA's PC catalog, the new integration introduces a strict Zero-Trust Hardware Binding (ZTHB) module. Under this updated framework, authentication tokens are tied cryptographically to the primary purchasing account's physical machine TPM (Trusted Platform Module).
"The proliferation of unauthorized token replication through shared Steam libraries poses an existential challenge to single-player IP security. Effective immediately, family licensing pools cannot be authorized for any SEGA, Ryu Ga Gotoku, or Atlus titles utilizing our latest anti-tamper revision."

Steam Family Sharing Permanently Revoked Across All SEGA Franchises
The immediate consequence of this policy is devastating for gamers sharing libraries with friends or household members. Starting with today's stealth patch on Steam, members of a Steam Family group attempting to launch shared copies of any major SEGA release will receive a fatal error: "License Error: Family Sharing Token Pool Depleted / Incompatible with Hardware Key."
According to internal patch notes corroborated by data-miners on GitHub, the restriction is retroactive and affects contemporary and legacy releases across all SEGA studios:
Persona 3 Reload (including Episode Aigis expansion)
Persona 5 Royal & Persona 4 Golden
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth & Like a Dragon Gaiden

Valve has not officially commented on whether it will push back against publishers overriding its revamped Steam Families system, but community reaction has been swift. Within hours, threads on r/Persona, r/yakuzagames, r/SonicTheHedgehog, and the Steam Community Hubs have surpassed tens of thousands of comments, with players expressing shock over the abrupt cancellation of shared access.
For thousands of players currently deep into hundreds of hours of Tartarus dungeon-crawling, Kamurocho street brawling, or Starfall Islands speedrunning on borrowed libraries, the party has abruptly ended. Unless SEGA reverses course, their only recourse will be to purchase individual licenses... or face the owner of the library directly.
